The technology for manufacturing sandlime bricks was patented in Germany in 1880. Manufacture of silicate bricks in Estonia began in 1910.
The first larger building from sandlime bricks constructed in the country was the Estonia Theatre (1913). In 1939, the highest structure in the Baltic States – the Suur Munamägi observation tower – was constructed from sandlime bricks.
In modern-time building solutions, sandlime bricks are used to cover facades, lay supporting walls in dwellings and production facilities (9-storey dwelling in Tallinn on the corner of Ehitajate and Vilde Roads – 2003), schoolhouses (Nõmme Basic School – 2003), for border guard stations and elsewhere.
The sole manufacturer of sandlime bricks in Estonia is AS Silikaat.
Currently the enterprise manufactures, in addition to sandlime bricks, construction mixtures, fractionalised dry sand, as well as mine building and filler sands.
